hexlox - The basics

The hexlox

The Hexlox is a small stainless steel insert that you place in the sockets of your already existing, magnetic (steel) hex bolts. Hexlox works with magnetic (steel) bolts. Test your bolt with a magnet from your fridge.

If your bolt is non-magnetic - or just slightly magnetic (like some stainless steel bolts) - swap the non-magnetic bolt for a magnetic (steel) bolt - we offer a great selection here.

The bolt is now secured against tampering from a potential thief equipped with a hex wrench/Allen key.

Hexlox comes in 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm.

You determine the right size Hexlox by inserting an Allen key/hex wrench into the hex bolt you want to secure. If a 5mm hex wrench fits - then you need a 5 mm Hexlox, and so on...

The Hexlox Key

When you order from us, our system randomly generates a 3-digit Key code to your key. All of the Hexlox and Hexlox Keys in your order work together with your personal and secret 3 digit code.

Your Hexlox can only be removed with your Hexlox Key.

If you lose your Key, simply order a new one from us, communicating your Hexlox Key Code, that identifies you as a previous customer. We take security very seriously and no one can order a Hexlox Key without providing a Hexlox Key Code - that our system can match to an order and email address.

How does the Hexlox and Hexlox Key work together?

Your Hexlox Key and your Hexlox - having the same keycode - form a very tight, mechanical bond. This is achieved through a very high degree of precision engineering and manufacturing - Made in Germany.

The shape of the Hexlox Key matches the shape of a Hexlox exactly - provided they have the same keycode.

How safe is Hexlox?

There is no lock in the world that is 100% safe.

All lock companies design and manufacture their products to combat opportunity theft, including Hexlox.

Most bike-part thefts are opportunity-driven. Someone passes a bike, sees that the saddle is not secured, and jumps on the opportunity to steal it.

Hexlox try to frustrate the thief so much that he/she simply gives up, and moves on.

We believe we do a really good job at this.

The Hexlox key card & Key code

When you order from us, you will receive a Key card containing your Hexlox, your Key, together with your personal and secret Hexlox Key Code.

If you want to order more products and still only use your original key, simply communicate to us your Key Code. All new products will work seamlessly with your old key.

Hex bolts

A hex bolt has a socket with six sides (hexagon) and it tightens with an Allen key/hex wrench.

To determine the right size Hexlox simply insert an Allen key/hex wrench into the hex bolt you want to secure. If a 5mm hex wrench fits - then you need a 5 mm Hexlox, and so on...

Magnetic vs. Non-Magnetic bolts

Hexlox works with magnetic (steel) bolts. Test your bolt with a magnet from your fridge.

If your bolt is non-magnetic - or just slightly magnetic (like some stainless steel bolts) - we recommend you to swap the non-magnetic bolt for a magnetic (steel) bolt - we offer a great selection here.

Cylindrical head vs. Pan head (rounded head)

If your hex bolt (with cylindrical head) is exposed and not sitting recessed, the bolt head could be grabbed and loosened with pliers - which makes this bolt still vulnerable to theft - even with a Hexlox installed.

Check this and replace your exposed bolt with our Hexlox Ready pan head bolt (with a rounded head - where pliers simply slip off) if necessary.

What Parts?

The Hexlox system can protect practically any part on your bike that is fastened with a magnetic (steel) hex bolt. (For non-magnetic bolts like Aluminum, Titanium or Stainless Steel choose our Hexlox For Non-Magnetic Bolts)

Hexlox also protects virtually any wheels (except for Fat Bike Wheels). No matter if you have quick release skewers, thru axles or nuts on your wheels.

Saddle and seat post, stem, fork and handlebar, pedals, lights - all can be secured with Hexlox (as long as it fastened with a magnetic hex bolt)

Wheels with Quick Release skewers

If you have quick release skewers on your wheels, simply replace them with our Hexlox Skewer, add a 5mm Hexlox and a Hexlox key.

Quick release skewers are thin (5mm) and they always have a moving lever that keeps the wheels in place. Quick Release Skewers are in place on a lot of bikes - chances are big that your bike has these.

wheels with Thru axle

If you have thru axles on your wheels, simply replace them with our Hexlox Universal Thru axle, add a 6mm Hexlox and a Hexlox key.

Thru axles are much thicker (9-20mm) than quick release skewers. They could have a lever - but not always. Most ebikes use thru axles. Thru axles are quickly becoming the new standard axle on wheels.

Wheels with Nuts

Wheel nuts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are always fastened with a wrench. If you ride a fixie/single speed, or if you have a Shimano hub, you have wheel nuts on your wheels.

Replace your nut with our Hexnut - that comes in 3 sizes: 9mm, 3/8 (imperial) and 10mm - add a Hexlox 6mm and a Hexlox Key.

Have a look at your saddle and seat post. Is it fastened with hex bolts? Are those bolts magnetic - or not? Maybe there is a quick release lever on the seat post, or maybe your seat post uses an integrated clamp? Do you have a guts clamp under your saddle?

Seat post Clamps - Quick release

Does your seat post clamp tighten with a lever?

Simply replace the bolt and lever with our M6 Set, insert the Hexlox 4mm to block access to the bolt. The Hexlox Key "locks and unlocks" the bolt.

Don’t forget that you need to protect both the saddle and the seat post. Even if the seat post is secured a thief could easily remove the saddle.

Get the M6 Set

Seat post Clamps - Hex bolts

Does your seat post clamp tighten with a hex bolt? A hex bolt is fastened with a 6-sided (hexagonal) tool - hex wrench/Allen key.

Simply insert a hex wrench/Allen key into the bolt to determine the right size Hexlox. If a 5mm hex wrench fits - then you need a 5 mm Hexlox, and so on...

Is the hex bolt magnetic - or not? Just grab a normal fridge magnet to figure that out 😉 For non-magnetic bolts (Aluminum, Titanium, Stainless Steel) you need to pick our Hexlox For Non-Magnetic Bolts

Integrated Seat Post Clamps

In integrated seat post clamp the clamp itself is - as the name suggests - integrated into the bike frame and a bolt is tightening the frame around the seatpost.

To secure this type of seat post measure the diameter of your current bolt. If your bolt is 6mm in diameter you need the M6 Set. If your bolt is 8mm in diameter you need the M8 Set. Use a caliper or compare the bolt to a bolt with known diameter. Insert the Hexlox to block access to the bolt. The Hexlox Key "locks and unlocks" the bolt. Done!

Don’t forget that you need to protect both the saddle and the seat post. Even if the seat post is secured a thief could easily remove the saddle.

Saddle - Guts Clamp

Guts clamps are usually found on older, vintage bikes, rarely on more modern bikes.

To secure your saddle simply replace your guts clamp bolt with the Hexlox Guts Clamp Saddle Bolt.

Saddle - Hex Bolts

Most saddles on modern bikes are fastened with hex bolts. Sometimes 1 bolt, sometimes 2. (A hex bolt is fastened with a 6-sided (hexagonal) tool - hex wrench/allen key.)

Magnetic - Or not? Are the hex bolts magnetic - or not? Just grab a normal fridge magnet to figure that out. For non-magnetic bolts (Aluminum, Titanium, Stainless Steel) you need to pick our Hexlox For Non-Magnetic Bolts

How Many Bolts? - How many hex bolts on your saddle? (We recommend that you secure all bolts under the saddle)

Which Size? - Use a hex wrench/Allen Key to determine the size of the Hexlox you need. If a 4mm Allen key fits in the socket you need to get a Hexlox 4mm, etc. You also need to add a Hexlox Key to your order.

Don't forget that you need to protect both the saddle and the seat post. Even if the saddle is secured a thief could easily remove the seat post.

How to measure bolts

You need to know 3 things about your bolt:

Length (in mm)
Diameter (in mm)
Size socket (M5, M6 etc.)

Measure bolt lenght

Measure the length of the bolt from the inside of the head to the end.

Measure bolt diameter

Measure the diameter of the bolt body - not the head!

Measure bolt socket

Measure the size of the socket. This is the size hex tool that can fasten and unfasten the bolt in mm. (It's also the size Hexlox that will fit into this particular bolt.)
